How photobiomodulation works

Red and near-infrared light is absorbed by the mitochondria within your cells, supporting more efficient production of ATP — the body’s cellular energy. The downstream effects are well documented: improved circulation, reduced inflammation, and faster tissue repair. It is a supportive therapy, not a cure, and it carries no UV exposure and no recovery time.

The two wavelengths are not interchangeable. Visible red near 660 nm is absorbed close to the surface, which is why skin and superficial tissue respond to it. Near-infrared near 850 nm is invisible and travels further, reaching muscle and the structures around a joint. A whole-body bed delivers both at once across your entire surface area, which is the practical difference between a NovoTHOR session and holding a handheld panel against one shoulder.

  • Cellular energy. Light fuels the mitochondria to raise ATP output.
  • Circulation. Vasodilation improves blood flow and oxygenation.
  • Inflammation. Oxidative stress is reduced, calming sore tissue.
  • Rest. Many clients report deeper sleep, when most repair occurs.

Clinically relevant benefits

The areas Freneau residents most often ask about — each with a detailed page.

Cadence, dosing and a realistic timeline

Photobiomodulation is dose-dependent and cumulative. A single session is pleasant and occasionally striking, but the outcomes documented in the literature come from repeated exposure over weeks, not from one visit. We would rather set that expectation before you book than after.

Weeks 1–2

Two to three sessions per week. Early reports are typically warmth during the session, a general sense of looseness afterwards, and deeper sleep that night.

Weeks 3–6

The same cadence. This is where tissue-level change tends to register: less morning stiffness, a shorter recovery window after exertion, steadier daily energy.

Ongoing

A lighter maintenance rhythm, often once weekly or timed around heavier activity. Results are individual and nothing here is a guaranteed outcome.

Practically, a session asks very little of you. You lie in the bed while panels above and below treat your whole body at once. Light does not pass through clothing, so the skin you expose is the skin that receives the dose; most clients wear as little as they are comfortable in, in a private room. Protective eyewear is provided. There is no heat to tolerate, no downtime, and nothing to bring.

Landmarks along the Matawan Creek headwaters

Freneau’s landmarks are almost entirely outdoors, which tells you something useful about how people here spend their time — and about the kind of wear that follows.

Freneau Woods Park

311 acres of woodland holding trails, a former monastery, and the headwaters of both Lake Lefferts and Matawan Creek.

Uneven, root-crossed trail surfaces load ankles, knees and hips very differently to a treadmill. Regular trail walkers are among the most common candidates for joint-focused recovery work.

Magnolia Visitor Center

The information point inside Freneau Woods Park and the usual starting line for exploring the park's trails and natural habitats.

Where a two-mile intention frequently turns into five. Distance you did not plan for is exactly the kind that shows up the following morning.

Lake Lefferts

A scenic lake at the edge of Freneau, popular for fishing, kayaking and simply sitting with a waterfront view.

Paddling and casting are shoulder-and-thoracic sports performed while seated. Both concentrate load into a small set of joints for hours at a time.

Monastery Lane

A local road tied to the former monastery within Freneau Woods Park, and one of the clearest surviving traces of the area's history.

A reminder that Freneau's appeal has always been quiet ground and unhurried movement — the pattern light therapy is designed to support rather than interrupt.

About Freneau

Freneau is a quiet, residential corner of Matawan named for the Revolutionary War poet Philip Freneau. Much of its character comes from open space — the 311-acre Freneau Woods Park with its former monastery, the headwaters of Lake Lefferts, and the walking and cycling paths of the Henry Hudson Trail. Residents lean on gyms, studios and health services across Matawan and Aberdeen for day-to-day wellness; whole-body light therapy adds a considered recovery option nearby in Howell.

Those trail paths are themselves a piece of local history: they follow the route of the former Monmouth County Agricultural Railroad, repurposed as the Henry Hudson Trail. It is a fitting emblem for a neighborhood that keeps what it has and finds a new use for it — a community-oriented, low-density place where the default recreation is on foot or on two wheels rather than indoors.

That pattern shapes what people come to us for. Group fitness, outdoor recreation and holistic health services are all well represented across the greater Matawan area, but structured recovery is thinner on the ground. A whole-body light session is a deliberate counterweight to a week of accumulated trail miles, and it is the piece most active residents are missing rather than duplicating.
