The way there
Garden State Parkway south to exit 80

It is the Parkway almost the whole way, which makes it a dull half hour rather than a hard one, and the only real decision is whether to use exit 80 or ride Route 9 up through Lakewood instead.

Bayville, Holiday City, Silver Ridge and Pinewald are all one township, which still catches out people who have lived here for a decade. Between them they make this one of the older municipalities in Ocean County, and most of what we get asked from this direction is some version of the same question: how long is the drive, how long am I lying down for, and how far is it from the car to the door.

The honest answers

The drive is Parkway, which is monotonous and predictable — the worst thing about it is the stretch through Brick and Lakewood on a summer Friday. A session on the bed is fifteen to twenty minutes. The car-to-door distance is a few yards of flat asphalt, because Cherry Tree Plaza is a single-story strip with parking in front of every unit.

What the NovoTHOR is cleared for is temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain, minor arthritis pain and muscle spasm, and increased local blood circulation. Plenty of people come for stiffness in the morning and general soreness after a day in the garden. That is a fair use of it, and we will not tell you it does more.

Neighborhoods and areas within Berkeley

Double Trouble

Double Trouble is a preserved company town inside Double Trouble State Park, on Cedar Creek in the Pine Barrens. Fourteen original buildings survive, among them a one-room schoolhouse, a general store and pickers' cottages, along with a restored sawmill and cranberry packing house. The historic district was listed on the National Register in 1978.

Dover Forge

Dover Forge is the site of a bog iron forge opened in 1809 on the middle branch of Cedar Creek, one of the largest of the Ocean County forges in its day. The ground is now the Dover Forge walk-in area of Double Trouble State Park, with a short trail out to the creek.

Holiday City

Holiday City is part of Holiday City-Silver Ridge Park, an age-restricted development that accounts for much of Berkeley Township's population. It is split into sections, among them Holiday City-Berkeley and Holiday City South, each with its own homeowners association and clubhouse. Holiday City-Berkeley alone holds more than 3,500 homes.

Pinewald

Pinewald was laid out in the 1920s by developer Benjamin Sangor, who sold some 8,000 lots toward a resort city in the pines before the venture collapsed in the Depression. Its centerpiece, the seven-story Royal Pines Hotel on man-made Crystal Lake, opened in 1930 and still stands as a nursing facility.

Silver Ridge

Silver Ridge is one of the census-designated places that make up Holiday City-Silver Ridge Park in Berkeley Township, an age-restricted community of roughly 1,200 residents. Silver Ridge Park East, North, West and Westerly are separate sections of the same development, each with its own clubhouse.

Questions from Berkeley

Is the Parkway or Route 9 better from Bayville?
The Parkway, nearly always. Route 9 through Toms River and Lakewood has a traffic light every few hundred yards. Exit 80 puts you on Route 530 and onto the Parkway in a couple of minutes, and that is longer in miles but shorter in time.
Is this a reasonable trip from Holiday City or Silver Ridge?
It is. Both sit off Route 530, which feeds onto the Parkway at exit 80, so the drive is essentially one road with a turn at either end.
Is there a step up into the studio?
No. The lot at Cherry Tree Plaza is flat, the door sits at the same level, and there is nothing to climb on a stiff knee. Parking is free and directly outside.
Do I have to come several times a week?
Two or three visits a week is the usual suggestion if you are working on something particular, but once a week is a perfectly normal pattern here. Nobody is signed up to a course they have to finish.
