Route 70 does almost all of the work, and the only stretch worth planning around is the run past Brick Boulevard and the shopping centers.
Route 70 is the trip. From Herbertsville and the top of the township you are into Howell almost before you have settled into the seat; from Osbornville, the Metedeconk side, or anywhere down near the bridge, it is a longer run and the Brick Boulevard stretch of 70 is what makes it long. Anyone who has sat through that light on a Friday afternoon already knows this.
Brick is one of the more populous townships in the state and it has no downtown, so going anywhere here means a road and a shopping center rather than a Main Street. Our studio is the same idea in reverse: a single room with a single NovoTHOR bed in Cherry Tree Plaza on Route 9, no gym bolted onto it and nothing else happening in the building. People come over from Brick for stiff mornings, legs that have been standing on a dock or a job site all day, and the kind of general soreness that does not belong to any one joint. The bed runs over all of it at once, which is most of the reason it suits that complaint.
Neighborhoods and areas within Brick
Herbertsville
Herbertsville sits at the northern edge of Brick Township, near the Monmouth County line and Garden State Parkway exit 91, set apart from the rest of the township. Herbertsville Park has ball fields and a path onto the Sawmill Bike Path, and the Brick Reservoir, 80 acres ringed by a 1.6-mile crushed stone loop, is farther along the same road.
Laurelton
Laurelton is part of the Laurelton and Burrsville section of Brick Township, long associated with the Havens family, whose 1827 homestead on Herbertsville Road is now the Havens Homestead Museum. The Laurelton Circle, where Route 70, Route 88 and Princeton Avenue met, was replaced by a signalized intersection in 1986.
Osbornville
Osbornville is one of the oldest settled parts of Brick Township, named for the Osborn family who were among the early settlers here. It keeps a village character of older homes, and West Osbornville is carried as a separate locality of its own alongside it.
Breton Woods
Breton Woods was laid out in 1934 as a colony of summer bungalows near the Metedeconk River, and Mantoloking Road still runs through the middle of it. Brick Township and Ocean County later paid $8.55 million for the neighborhood's last large wooded tract, 32 acres off Laurel Avenue, to hold it as open space.
Metedeconk
Metedeconk and Metedeconk Neck are villages in Brick Township on the tidal Metedeconk River, which empties into Barnegat Bay. Windward Beach Park on Princeton Avenue sits on the river with a beach, fishing and crabbing piers, and a farmers market on Saturdays from May through September.
Boroughs and places next to Brick
Mantoloking
Mantoloking is a separate borough on the barrier peninsula, tied to Brick Township by the Mantoloking Bridge across Barnegat Bay. Hurricane Sandy damaged or destroyed all 521 of its homes in 2012 and cut a channel from the ocean through to the bay. The Mantoloking Yacht Club has sailed here since the early 1900s.
Questions from Brick
- Which part of Brick is closest?
- The Herbertsville end and anywhere near the northern township line. From the bayfront side over by the Mantoloking bridge you are adding a solid ten minutes before you have even reached Route 70.
- Is Route 70 as bad as it feels?
- The Brick Boulevard intersection and the run past the shopping centers are the slow parts, and they are worst between four and six. West of the Lakewood line it opens up and stays open.
- Can I come straight from the beach or the boat?
- Yes, though you go into the bed dry and with nothing on your skin, so rinse the sunscreen and salt off first. Beyond that there is no preparation and nothing to bring.
- Do you have Saturday appointments?
- Saturdays run by appointment rather than posted hours. That usually works in your favour here — a Saturday morning slot gets you across Route 70 before it fills up.
