- Route 524 west
Route 524 through Adelphia is two lanes of farm fence and horse pasture with almost nothing on it to slow you down, and it barely changes between nine in the morning and five at night.
There is no downtown here to be near, which is most of what needs saying about the geography. Millstone is farms, horse properties and subdivisions spread across a large piece of western Monmouth County; the high school students go to Allentown, the shopping happens in Freehold or Manalapan, and Route 524 is the road that connects the township to everything east of it.
That road is also how you get to us. What is at the end of it is deliberately unremarkable: a plaza on Route 9, a free lot, one room with a NovoTHOR in it, and fifteen or twenty minutes on your back under red and near-infrared light. The clearance is for temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain and for increased local circulation. There is nothing else to the offer.
Neighborhoods and areas within Millstone
Charleston Springs
Charleston Springs gives its name to the county golf course on Woodville Road, where Mark Mungeam laid out thirty-six holes. The links-style North course opened in 1999 and the parkland South course in 2002, and a five-acre short game area was added in 2007.
Clarksburg
Clarksburg is the Millstone Township village that has kept its historic fabric most intact. The Clarksburg Methodist Episcopal Church of 1845, on County Route 524, has been on the National Register since 1999, and the four-room Clarksburg School of 1925 now serves as the township municipal building.
Stone Tavern
Stone Tavern sits on the line between Millstone and Upper Freehold townships and takes its name from Britton's Tavern, a stone building that once stood there. Stone Tavern Lake covers fifty-two acres and has a public boat launch.
Boroughs and places next to Millstone
Roosevelt
Roosevelt was built in the 1930s as Jersey Homesteads, a New Deal cooperative for garment workers resettled out of New York, with 200 flat-roofed houses set around a greenbelt. It is the only municipality in the state listed on the National Register in its entirety, and the Roosevelt Arts Project still runs there.
Questions from Millstone
- Is there anything closer to Millstone than Howell?
- Not that we would send you to, and the township has no commercial strip of its own anyway. Most errands from here end up in Freehold, Manalapan or Jackson, and we are about the same distance as any of those.
- Does the drive really change at rush hour?
- Barely. Route 524 carries almost no commuter volume. Nearly all of the difference between the off-peak and peak figures on this page is the last mile, on Route 9.
- Do you get people from Clarksburg and Perrineville?
- From both ends of the township, yes. Clarksburg comes across on Route 524; the Perrineville end usually comes down Perrineville Road and picks up Route 33 or Route 9.
