The way there
Route 9 north, Route 33 west, Applegarth Road

Applegarth Road down to Route 33 and then east is farm fields and community entrances for most of it, which makes it an easy drive to learn and a hard one to get lost on.

Concordia, Rossmoor, Clearbrook and Greenbriar at Whittingham hold a large share of this township between them, and a large share of the people who call us are dealing with knees, hips and hands that are stiffer at seven in the morning than they were twenty years ago. The NovoTHOR is FDA-cleared for temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain, minor arthritis pain and muscle spasm, and for increasing local blood circulation. That is what it is for, and we are not going to tell you anything beyond it.

What a visit actually involves

You lie down, the canopy comes over you, and the light runs for fifteen to twenty minutes. Nothing presses on you, there is no heat worth mentioning, and you can stop it at any point by saying so. A first visit runs about forty-five minutes because we talk before anything else happens. After that, most people are in and out inside half an hour.

Parking, steps and waiting

Free parking directly in front of the door, and the door is at the same level as the lot — no curb to step up, no stairwell. If somebody is driving you over from Applegarth Road, there is somewhere for them to sit rather than wait in the car.

Clearbrook Park

Clearbrook Park is an age-restricted community in the center of Monroe Township, with about 2,000 homes built between 1972 and 1993. Its nine-hole golf course opened in 1973 and is open to the public, and the Cultural Center holds an auditorium seating a thousand.

Concordia

Half Acre

A few single-family houses and small businesses line those roads, but most of the surrounding land is taken up by the age-restricted communities: Concordia, Clearbrook Park, Greenbriar at Whittingham and Encore at Monroe.

Hoffman

Hoffman, also called Hoffman Station, grew up around a stop on the Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad, which ran from 1853 until 1964. What is left is housing along Hoffman Station Road and Gravel Hill-Spotswood Road, with the Manalapan Brook valley and woodland behind it.

Matchaponix

Matchaponix is a neighborhood in Monroe Township between Spotswood and Jamesburg, on the road of the same name. Matchaponix Brook, whose Lenape name means country of poor bread, forms the township's boundary with Old Bridge, and the county preserved the 100-acre Matchaponix Forest in 2008.

Prospect Plains

Prospect Plains sits where Prospect Plains Road crosses Applegarth Road. It had a station on the Camden and Amboy Railroad and a one-room schoolhouse, and it held the township's main office for a time. The Monroe Oak, a white oak standing when the township was created in 1838, became the township's symbol.

Rossmoor

Rossmoor is a gated age-restricted co-op of about 2,300 homes on 418 acres, laid out around a private eighteen-hole golf course that takes up 104 acres in the middle of it. The community association runs a 30,000-square-foot clubhouse, a fitness center, an on-site health center and more than forty clubs.

Wyckoffs Mills

Wyckoffs Mills straddles the line between Monroe and Cranbury townships at the meeting of Wyckoff Mills Road and Wyckoffs Mills Road. Apart from the houses there, the land around it is farmland and wetland, with the Millstone River running past to the south.

Boroughs and places next to Monroe Township

Cranbury

Helmetta

Helmetta is a small borough that broke away from East Brunswick in 1888, named by the snuff manufacturer George W. Helme for his daughter Etta. The plant closed in 1993. Helmetta Pond and the pine barrens of the Jamesburg Park Conservation Area sit at the borough's edge.

Jamesburg

Questions from Monroe Township

Which Monroe communities do people usually come from?
Concordia, Rossmoor, Clearbrook and Greenbriar at Whittingham come up most often. The route is the same from all of them — out to Applegarth Road, down to Route 33, then east.
Is the Turnpike faster than Route 33 for this trip?
No. Interchange 8A is useful if you are heading north, but for coming here it puts you on the long way around. Route 33 east through Manalapan is shorter door to door even at five o'clock.
How much walking is there between the car and the bed?
Very little. The lot at Cherry Tree Plaza is level with the door, there are no stairs and no elevator, and the room is a few paces inside the entrance.
What time of day is the easiest drive from Monroe?
Mid-morning. Route 33 stiffens up near the Route 9 intersection from about four-thirty onward, so the ten o'clock openings on Monday, Wednesday and Friday are usually the calmest run in both directions.
